Red Bull Cheever Looks for First Victory of Season at Richmond

The Red Bull Cheever Racing duo of Eddie Cheever Jr. and Tomas Scheckter have done just about everything in the Indy Racing League this season-everything except win.

Eddie Cheever Jr. won his first IRL career pole position at California Speedway in March, and turned the fastest race lap at Texas. He finished only three of seven races this season, with a best finish of fifth at Indy. A winner of five IRL races, including the 1998 Indianapolis 500, Cheever is still looking for a victory this season.

Rookie Tomas Scheckter was awarded the Indy 500 co-rookie of the year title at Indy this year, and led more laps than any other driver at Indy and Texas. He is also the youngest driver to ever win an IRL pole position, accomplishing this feat at Texas. Despite ranking third in the number of laps led this season he only has one top ten finish: a sixth at the season opener at Miami.

Both Red Bull Cheever Racing drivers will be looking for their first victory of the season in the SunTrust Indy Challenge at the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night.

Eddie Cheever Jr. on Richmond

"Richmond is like fighter planes in a gym. You never get to rest, to back off, or to sweep a mistake under the carpet. If you make a mistake at this place you will spin. End of story. It's ultra exciting!"

Tomas Scheckter on Richmond

"I hope that it's not like our weekend in Colorado. Looking at the race tapes and the setups, Richmond is a completely new thing again. It is very tight. Physically it is going to be tough. My attitude for every oval now is to just hang out in the beginning of the race and then push at the end."

Flashback: Cheever's History at Richmond

In last year's inaugural IRL race at the .75-mile Richmond International Raceway, Eddie Cheever Jr. was a favorite for victory in the 250-lap race. He moved into second place on lap 185 and then during an attempt to pass Eliseo Salazar for the lead on lap 214 both cars crashed. Cheever finished 13th.

"Last year I was racing Salazar for the lead when we touched and both cars went into the wall. It was a great race. There is just no room for error at all at Richmond. The spotter is a very important person on race day at Richmond. I just hope we have better results this year."
