HERTA HANGS ON FOR EIGHTH-PLACE RESULT IN XM SATELLITE RADIO CAR
RICHMOND, Va. (June 25, 2005) - Bryan Herta, driver of the #7 XM Satellite Radio car, started from the sixth position and hung on for an eighth-place finish at the SunTrust Indy Challenge Saturday at Richmond International Raceway.
From the beginning of the race, Herta reported a problem with the car being too loose. Despite making a tire pressure adjustment in the first pit stop, the problem persisted. After an early yellow flag, the XM Satellite Radio crew decided to stay out on the racetrack and moved into third place. By lap 125, still running third, Herta started to encounter lapped traffic. From that point, he slowly dropped positions.
Settling in for the stretch run just inside the top 10, Herta set his sights for a move to the front. Over the final 75 laps, Herta managed to overtake a few drivers and gained valuable points toward the championship. With the eighth-place finish, Herta is sixth in the points championship, 13 points ahead of Scott Sharp and Vitor Meira in seventh.
Helio Castroneves won his first race of the year. He was followed across the line by Herta's AGR teammate, Dario Franchitti. Patrick Carpentier, Tomas Scheckter and Indy Racing League® IndyCar® Series points leader Dan Wheldon rounded out the top five.
The IndyCar Series season resumes Sunday, July 3, from Kansas Speedway. Live coverage of the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 begins at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN. It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers on Extreme XM, channel 152.
Bryan Herta, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"It was a tough day and I'm disappointed. I thought that the XM Satellite Radio car was going to be very good in the race, but it just got away from us. It was really loose and we tried our best to make adjustments, but it just didn't work out. Eighth place isn't the end of the world, but it's not what we came here to do either."
George Klotz, Team Manager, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"The XM Satellite Radio car really didn't have the best day today. Richmond is a tricky place to race. An eighth-place finish wasn't what we were looking for, but I kind of feel lucky that we finished that well. We'll take our points and start preparing for Kansas."
