Schmidt Stands on it for Fourth Place Spot on the Grid for the Radisson 200

Colorado Springs, CO: With a blast of speed, Treadway Racing star pilot Sam Schmidt proved he could accelerate in his #99 Sprint PCS/G-Force/Aurora/Firestone combination today as he navigated around the Pike's Peak one mile oval to secure a fourth place starting position for tomorrow's race. With a qualifying speed of 175.072 mph-his fastest lap of the weekend, and a time of 20.563, he was a mere tenth of a second of f of the top speed of the day set by Greg Ray.

At Pike's Peak International Raceway, the altitude is a factor for the drivers and teams of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. With this in mind, the Treadway Racing crew changed motors last evening and switched to an Aurora engine prepared by Comptech that would handle the higher altitudes and enable the car to run just as it would at sea level. The strategy proved beneficial, as Schmidt was able to improve his lap times during the first practice of the day.

The team will begin tomorrow's race on the outside of row two, which gives Sam Schmidt plenty of room to charge to the front. "We were really hoping for the front two rows today," he said. "The car was really consistent and I was able to run fairly flat around the track today. The guys on my crew put a really good car together for me today and I think we will have a great shot at it tomorrow! This track is fairly wide which allows for a lot of passing, so I think the fans will see some good racing action. I have been ready to race since Thursday, so I am excited to get out there and mix it up at the front."

During the final practice of the day, the team switched to race strategy and concentrated on full fuel runs. The Sprint PCS car was consistent and Schmidt was able to clock off several laps of 170 plus mph., which keeps him right in the front of the pack. The Treadway Racing team hopes that their performance today foreshadows tomorrow's race.
