Lazier earns top-ten in front of home crowd

Fountain, Colo. - Vail, Colorado native Buddy Lazier and the Hemelgarn team scored their first top-10 of the 2003 IRL IndyCar Series TM season during the Honda Indy 225 at the 1-mile Pikes Peak International Raceway June 15.

The 2001 Pikes Peak winner started 17th; due to rain canceling qualifying on Saturday, and worked bit by bit toward the front of the field. Lazier climbed as high as seventh, staying in the top-10 until a green flag pit stop forced him to fall a lap down.

Lazier managed to battle back by the end of the 225-lap event but could not overtake Buddy Rice for ninth position when the caution flag fell with just five laps remaining. The fast paced race, which saw just four caution flags, would finish under yellow.

"We were hoping to get a restart after the last caution because we could have picked off another car or two before the finish," said Lazier. "In hindsight we would have done a few things differently and improved quite a bit. It's a top-10 finish - not what we want, we want to be in the top-five and winning, but it's a step in the right direction.

"We learned a few things today so we'll have some things to go away with and work on for Richmond."

At the end of the day, Lazier finished two laps off the leaders to earn the 10th spot and valuable championship points.

The next IndyCar Series event is the SunTrust Indy Challenge on Saturday night, June 28 at Richmond International Raceway.
