Firehawk consistency helps guide Dixon to 2nd win of season
Scott Dixon of Target Chip Ganassi Racing became the first two-time winner in 2003 IRL IndyCar competition by leading the final 85 laps to the checkered flag today. Coupled with his victory in the season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March, it gives Dixon two career IRL wins and puts him in the middle of the championship hunt.
Starting sixth, Dixon paced himself in his G Force/Toyota on Firestone tires, diving inside Gil de Ferran for the lead on the 142nd lap around the mile oval. He would lead the rest of the way and cross the finish line ahead of runner-up Tony Kanaan under a caution flag.
Afterward, Dixon praised the performance of the Firestone Firehawk tires for contributing to the triumph. "The tires were great," Dixon said, "very consistent. They had a lot of grip all day long."
The victory vaulted Dixon into second place in the season standings. Kanaan leads with 218 points and Dixon heads a logjam for second with 168, just ahead de Ferran, Helio Castroneves and Al Unser Jr. (all tied with 167).
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Project Supervisor, Firestone Racing: "We saw track temperatures soar to 135 degrees today, yet the Firehawk tires more than stood up to the challenge. They provided their trademark durability and consistency, and helped Scott Dixon work his way through the field and drive to victory. Scott must enjoy the tire specification the Firestone engineers selected for this weekend. We've utilized this spec twice this season and Scott has won both races - at Homestead and again today. He'll probably be asking us to run it at every race from now on."
Race temperatures ranged from 106 to 135 degrees track and from 81 to 83 degrees ambient (F). Race temperatures ranged from 41 to 57 degrees track and from 27 to 28 degrees ambient (C).
