Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:

Firestone delivered 760 Firehawk racing radials for use this weekend. All were produced at the Firestone Technical Center in Akron, Ohio. Per IndyCar Series regulations, each entered car receives up to seven sets of tires (28 total) to be used at the team's discretion throughout the practice, qualifying and race sessions.

The tread compound and tire construction combination for Pikes Peak is a familiar and successful one. In fact, Gil de Ferran raced with the same tire specification under him a year ago when he led 217 of the 225 laps in a dominant victory at PPIR. The spec also was used in the 2003 IndyCar season opener at Miami-Homestead Speedway. It is scheduled for use later this season at Nashville Superspeedway and Gateway International Raceway.

Stagger Helps the Cars Go 'Round: Firestone engineers purposely design the right rear tire to have a circumference slightly larger than that of the left rear tire for oval competition. The size differential is minor - just 0.51 inches this weekend - but the effect, called "stagger," helps the IndyCars turn left more naturally and smoothly - and decreases the stresses on car and driver alike.

Quote from Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing:

"Every racetrack has its nuances and challenges, and Pikes Peak is no different. The greatest challenge for all component suppliers here is the altitude, and that goes for tires as well. Because of the thin air, we often register on this oval some of the hottest track temperatures that we see all season - approaching 150 degrees. But the tire we've called upon for this year has already proven its mettle at PPIR and elsewhere, giving drivers the confidence to maneuver wherever they need to race and also providing the consistency throughout entire fuel runs. We're confident the Firehawks will deliver that same unparalleled performance and contribute to another exciting race this weekend."

The Official Tire of the IRL: Firestone is the exclusive tire supplier to the Indy Racing League for both the IndyCar and Infiniti Pro series.
