Third row start for the Curb/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing Team in the Radisson Indy 225.
"The thing with Pike's Peak is that you never know what to expect," said Billy Boat after his qualifying run today at the Pikes Peak International Raceway. The same could be said about the CURB Records team after watching their performance today.
Deciding to use most of practice time for race set-up, rather than the tradition time devoted to qualifying set-up, the CURB team didn't finish very high on the speed charts during either of the two practice sessions, posting a fast lap of 173.718 mph in 20.7486 seconds. But things changed dramatically once the #98 hit the track to qualify for the Radisson Indy 225. Boat 's qualifying lap was 176.029 mph in 20.4512 seconds -- good enough to put him on the outside of Row 3 for tomorrow's race.
Boat credits engineer Darrell Soppe and the entire CURB/Agajanian/Boat team for the success today. "Because of the short amount of practice time we didn't have a lot of time to really work on a lot of different things we wanted to try, but the CURB Records team did a great job with the qualifying set-up. We kind of guessed on a few things that we didn't get to try when the rain shortened our practice time and we got it pretty close. It wasn't perfect, but it was pretty close, so we feel good about that. This is a track that I really like and where Darrell Soppe has had a lot of success so we're looking forward to getting more good results tomorrow."
The team's outstanding results give Boat some confidence for the race, but he's staying cautiously optimistic, "Conditions change so much at this track and the weather affects the track so drastically - it can do a 180 within two hours. In practice you can have a perfect race car and then go back out & be totally wrong. I think our experience here, having been here many times, having watched this racetrack and what it does, we are just going to make our best guesses on what we think we're going to need and hope that it'll be enough."
After a 4th place finish at this race last year, Billy Boat is hungry for a Top 3 finish. Final practice for the Radisson Indy 225 takes place Sunday, June 16 at 9:30am MDT, followed by the race, which will air live on ABC television at 2:00pm MDT.
