Boat hoping for happy Father's Day in Colorado.
As the CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing team heads to Fountain, CO this weekend for the seventh race in the Indy Racing League schedule, driver Billy Boat is hoping that the fast and furious Radisson Indy 225 will result in a Top 5 finish. With many years of short track racing under his belt, Boat is optimistic that his experience will give the team an advantage this Sunday, June 16, 2002 at the Pikes Peak International Raceway.
Coming off another Top 10 finish, last week in Texas, and with a 4th place finish in this race last year, there's no better Father's Day gift that Boat would like to give or receive than another spectacular finish to this race on the 1-mile oval. There's no doubt that the altitude -- the track, just south of Colorado Springs, is at 5,537 feet above sea level -- will be a factor, but Boat's not concerned, "I think that the altitude has more of an effect on the downforce and performance of the race car than on the driver. As we do with every race, we're taking all aspects of a track and it's unique characteristics into consideration when preparing our race set-up."
As a former Sprint Car driver, he enjoys the short track races, "The CURB/Agajanian/Boat team is looking forward to the next two races on our schedule. The 1-mile Pike's Peak International Raceway may be only one mile, but it really drives like a superspeedway. Coming back to the shorter tracks may be a little bit of an advantage for our team. We had a 4th place finish there last year and [team engineer] Darrell Soppe had a car that sat on the pole and has had cars that have run well there in the past. We feel like we are coming to Pikes Peak with a good baseline and the opportunity for a good finish. Coming off the race we had in Texas, we weren't as fast as we wanted to be but we felt like we were very competitive and now we're looking forward to trying to get a Top 5 finish for the team."
Practice for the race begins at 10:00am (MDT) on Saturday, June 15th with qualifying later that afternoon as well as a free driver autograph session for fans at the track. The Radisson Indy 225, on Sunday, June 16th is scheduled to start at 2:00pm (MDT) and will air live on ABC.
