Conseco/A.J. Foyt Driver Billy Boat Scores Top Ten Finish in Comeback Race
FOUNTAIN, Colo.: Aug. 16, 1998 - Pole winner Billy Boat finished ninth in the Radisson 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway. It was his first race back in the No. 11 Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara-Aurora since the New Hampshire Pep Boys IRL event wh en he broke his femur in a racing accident.
Starting the 200-lap race from the pole position, Boat struggled with handling problems all day. He managed to keep the No. 11 Conseco car in the top ten for most of the race and with 20 laps to go he was in second place. Unfortunately, Boat was unable to hold on to that podium position when his luck took a turn for the worse.
"We didn't have a great day," Boat said. "It didn't look too bad there at the end, but then my car just went really loose. For the last few laps I was just trying to hang on and salvage a top five, then we ran out of fuel with two laps to go."
By running out of fuel, Boat dropped from second place to ninth place. While the team's gamble on fuel didn't work for Boat, it did work for his A.J. Foyt Enterprises teammate Kenny Brack, who won the race.
"At one point in the race I felt I was just as quick as Kenny, but my car was really bad behind other cars in traffic," Boat said. "Kenny did a great job. They were in position to win and they were there when they needed to be. At least we ran all day. We'll come back and try to get them at Atlanta."
The highlight of Boat's weekend was winning the PPG pole award for the Radisson 200 on Saturday. His lap of 178.571 mph (20.160 seconds) earned him the track record for the one-mile oval located near Colorado Springs, Colo. It was his fourth pole of his Pep Boys Indy Racing League career and his third this season. The next event on the schedule for Billy Boat and the Conseco/Foyt crew is the Atlanta Classic 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on the evening of Saturday, Aug. 29.
