Fast Times In Phoenix
Phoenix, AZ (February 27, 1999) -- A total of twenty-three drivers took the track at the Pep Boys Indy Racing League's "Test in the West." Mark Dismore (MCIWorldCom #28) leaves the test in an enviable position; #1. Teammate Scott Sharp finished second by only four one-thousandths of a second.
The day nearly ended early for the driver of the Delphi Automotive Systems car. Scott's car backed into the outside of turn #2 early in the session. The 'black box' recorded an impact of one hundred times the force of gravity (100G's). The big hit was handled easily by the safety equipment onboard car #8. The headrest, form-fitting seat, gearbox and attenuator performed flawlessly.
Top ten speeds for the two day test:
1. Mark Dismore #28 175.627 mph
2. Scott Sharp #8 175.593 mph
3. Greg Ray #2 175.593 mph
4. Scott Goodyear #4 173.955 mph
5. Billy Boat #11 173.486 mph
6. Kenny Brack #14 173.244 mph
7. Tyce Carlson #20 172.356 mph
8. Robbie Buhl #44 172.109 mph
9. John Hollansworth #42 171.739 mph
10. Eddie Cheever #51 171.625 mph
Mark Dismore "We had a very good car. I am really happy I have stepped up my short track performance. The car hasn't missed a beat and I have a great crew to thank."
Scott Sharp -- "What a day. I'm glad we bounced back the way we did. I am happy with the car. We didn't think we would get as much done as we did. I hate to see what happened this morning, but I may have learned a thing or two. The accident certainly could have happened at a less opportune time; like maybe the race weekend. At least we were able to get back out there and try some more ideas on the track."
David Cripps, technical director -- "We are pleased with our results again today. The crash this morning was an unfortunate incident. It was a combination of several conditions. We were fortunate to escape with minor damage. The accident was a minor setback for our program. It was nice that we were able to get back on the track and pick up where we left off on our testing program."
