SHARP FASTEST IN GOODYEAR TESTING AT PHOENIX

PHOENIX, Thursday, February 6, 1997 -- Scott Sharp turned a lap Wednesday at 165.138 mph at Phoenix International Raceway, the fastest circuit of a Goodyear tire test. High winds limited testing to a handful of warmup laps through mid-afternoon Thursday. Sweden's Kenny Brack was the only driver to resume testing at 2:30 p.m. (PST) in a Galles Racing entry. Brack was second fastest of the sessions with a lap Wednesday at 163.043. Sharp's lap was 21.80 seconds around the one-mile oval.

The teams were preparing for the Phoenix 200 on March 23, 1997, the fourth race of the 1996-97 Indy Racing League season. They return to the Desert Mile February 24-28 for the second annual "Test in the West," open to all IRL teams.

QUOTES: SCOTT SHARP: "I don't think the pole's going to be a whole lot quicker than 21.8. If conditions are right and it isn't too hot when we come for the race and there's not much wind, it might be. To get the pole, you're going to have to run a 21.7 or 21.8. Goodyear gave us a great tire here last year. Basically we had the field covered before the pit violation and still finished second. We came down here to find out not only what works for two laps of qualifying but what works for 200 laps."

BUZZ CALKINS: "We had an engine problem, so better safe than sorry. We're taking it back, getting it worked out and come back for the open test. I'm pretty comfortable for a starting point. It was a tire test so we didn't' do much chassis work."

EDDIE CHEEVER, JR.: "We're very happy with some of the things we found...had a good test. We were going to do some serious running today but the wind stopped us in our tracks. Nothing's really changed for me since we won the last race (the Indy 200 Presented by Aurora at Walt Disney World), other than it's easier to get some things done. We weren't quick enough in Orlando. We were reliable but we're not satisfied with the speed. Whenever you have a new car, even if you know the race track like here, you have to get it set in to what it likes. It takes a lot of running to get it working properly. We'll be back the 24th through the 28th."
