SHARP 1ST TO RUN DALLARA AT PHOENIX; BRACK TESTS FOR GALLES RACING AS PART OF GOODYEAR SESSIONS
PHOENIX, February 4, 1997 -- Scott Sharp took the first Dallara chassis on to Phoenix International Raceway's Desert Mile and Kenny Brack took his first laps in an Indianapolis-style car today for the first session of a three-day Goodyear tire test here.
Sharp, the 1996 Indy Racing League co-champion, and Davey Hamilton are on hand to test for A.J. Foyt Enterprises. Brack, the 1996 European Formula 3000 runner-up from Karlstad, Sweden, is testing for Galles Racing. Eddie Cheever, winner of the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora two weeks ago, is also on hand with his own team and Buzz Calkins, the 1996 IRL co-champion and winner of the 1996 Indy 200, is here with Bradley Motorsports.
The tests are in preparation for the Indy Racing League Phoenix 200 on March 23, the fourth race of the 1996-97 IRL season.
Before the four IRL teams arrived today, only Arie Luyendyk, in the first test of a new League car in November for Treadway Racing, and Davy Jones, for Galles in December, had tested the new machines here.
QUOTES: KENNY BRACK (first time in an Indianapolis-style car, second time on an oval): "I ran an oval in '93 at New Hampshire with the Barber Saab Series." (When asked if anything about the car surprised him): "No, and I hope I don't get any surprises either. As for now, it's feeling good. It's a bit different from a road course car. It's still a race car."
EDDIE CHEEVER (about his win at Walt Disney World): "I got the check on Thursday. It was an exciting weekend. Everybody did what they were supposed to do. Things can't always go against you. Everybody on the team is very happy but we're conscious that we have a race to run pretty soon. The concept of the team is more present to me than it was before."
SCOTT SHARP (about Phoenix, and the saying that doing well at Phoenix means you'll do well at Indianapolis): "It's certainly one of my favorite tracks and certainly one of A.J.'s. Our team is going to be strong at every race and at Phoenix and Indy, we should be stronger. We should've won the race here (in '96) and had a couple of different small problems, then we had a great month of May. There's a lot to be said about that (Phoenix leading to Indy) and I don't know why. You run different setups, different wings, different components. It has a lot to do with momentum. We all want to be pushing hard every session and being here testing is the start of that."
