Phoenix, AZ (March 26, 1999) - Greg Ray set the fast time of the day in today's practice for Sunday's MCI WorldCom 200 at Phoenix International Raceway. Ray's quickest lap, at 20.731, was set in this morning's session before high winds came into the area. "The first session, we actually ran on pretty full tanks," said Ray. "This last session we worked on nothing but full tanks. The car was pretty consistent, really good for how windy it was."
In the afternoon session, Ray managed to set the fourth fastest lap with a time of 21.150.
High winds in this afternoon's practice session saw speeds drop across the board. Fastest in the afternoon was Sam Schmidt in the No. 99 Treadway entry. Schmidt's lap at 21.042 was three-tenths of a second slower than the fastest lap set in the morning session. "We took a conservative approach today because Orlando was terrible," Schmidt said. "This morning we were running full tanks, working on a race set up. We had a lot of grip in the car and we were really surprised. So this afternoon, we said what the heck, we'll just put ten gallons in and see what happens. That's when we ran the quick lap."
After setting the fast time, the team put more fuel in and continued working on the race set up. "We went back to what we did this morning, put more gas in it and ran full tanks the rest of the time," said Schmidt. "We could run consistently 21.4 or 21.6 so we think that's a really good race car. I'm not quite sure what we'll do tomorrow but to be able to come from Orlando, and that set back it's really helpful for morale."
Schmidt's fastest lap of the day, good enough for fifth overall at the end of the day, was set in the morning session.
Setting fourth quickest time today was John Hollansworth. Hollansworth suffered engine problems in the afternoon session, dropping him to seventeenth position in the afternoon. "We've really slowed down this afternoon," said Hollansworth. "Ours was because of an engine problem. Everything is feeling good here. I just hope we can keep progressing and finish a race after not finishing at Orlando."
Qualifying for Sunday's MCI WorldCom 200 gets underway at 11:30 MST tomorrow afternoon.
