AVONDALE, Ariz. (March 22, 2003) - Preparing for his first IRL IndyCar Series race in his hometown of Phoenix, Buddy Rice qualified 16th with the No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing Dallara/Chevy/Firestone car. The quickest of his two qualifying laps clocked out at 20.8448 seconds, 172.70 mph.

"We had a good practice session this morning and figured some things out," Rice said. "We went a little aggressive for qualifying. We tried to clean it up to have one good run. I went down into turns one and two and it was pushing. The thing just stepped out just a little bit and did a big slide through one and two. At least we have a good handle on the car right now. We have a solid race car. The car is good in traffic right now which it wasn't at Homestead. That's a big gain for us. Hopefully things will be different tomorrow than they were in Homestead."

The Purex Dial Indy 200 starts at 3:30 p.m. (EST) on Sunday and will be televised live on ABC.
