Toyota and Penske Racing announce IRL engine supply agreement.

READING, PA - Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. and Penske Racing, Inc. announced today that they have reached an agreement for Toyota to supply Indy Racing League (IRL) engines to Penske Racing beginning in 2003, the manufacturer's inaugural season of IRL competition.

The contract ensures Toyota another top-level team, along with Kelley Racing, in its quest for its first Indianapolis 500 victory and an IRL championship.

"It's a historic day as we enter a partnership with Penske Racing, the most successful team in open-wheel racing history," said Jim Aust, Toyota vice president of motorsports. "It's great to partner with the 11-time Indy 500 winners. In addition, we're thrilled to continue a long-term relationship that has developed both on and off the track."

Roger Penske-led companies own Toyota dealerships in the U.S., Mexico and Brazil. The Penske-owned Longo Toyota in El Monte, California, is the largest Toyota dealership in the world. Penske Racing will be one of the teams involved in testing the new Toyota

Indy engine later this season. Principal components for the Team's engines will be supplied by Toyota Racing Development (TRD), U.S.A., in Costa Mesa, California, and the engines will be assembled by Penske Racing in Reading, Pennsylvania. Penske Racing will serve as one of TRD's-designated engine rebuilders. The powerplant has been undergoing dynamometer testing by TRD in Costa Mesa since February and will begin on-track testing this summer. "Toyota's automotive and motorsports heritage demonstrates its commitment to excellence," said Roger Penske. "We have had many successes with Toyota in our business to business relationships over the years and look forward to continuing successes on the race track."

Penske Racing has registered a record 111 Indy car racing wins, with 11 Indy 500 victories and 11 championships. Team driver Gil de Ferran won the last two CART championships, while teammate Helio Castroneves is the defending Indianapolis 500 winner and winner of the 2002 IRL event at Phoenix International Raceway.
