Penske cars will not build 2003 Indy Racing chassis.
INDIANAPOLIS, Tuesday, April 23, 2002 -- Indy Racing League officials informed Penske Cars on April 23 that the chassis manufacturer will not be selected to produce Indy Racing League chassis in 2003, said Brian Barnhart, IRL vice president of operations.
"The Indy Racing League is moving forward in its selection of approved chassis suppliers based upon what it believes is in the best interests of the league and its participants," Barnhart said. "The league acknowledges the high level of product and excellent customer service that Penske Cars has provided in other series, but we have decided we will not consider its application further."
Several applications by potential chassis manufacturers met the required April 1, 2002, deadline. A letter notified applicants April 3 that an extensive review and interview process would be used to narrow the chassis manufacturers allowed to supply cars in 2003. Indy Racing League officials intend to finish the review of the proposals by the end of April.
Factors the league is considering in applicants include experience with the Indy Racing League, financial stability, production capacity, technical support ability and plans for use of the chassis in other racing formats.
"The league appreciates the valuable contribution that Team Penske has made to the IRL during its first season as a full-time participant," Barnhart said. "And we look forward to them continuing with us at such a high level of competition."
Penske Cars and other chassis manufacturers who are not selected to supply chassis in 2003 will be allowed to resubmit applications for the 2004 season by April 1, 2003, Barnhart said.
