Marlboro Team Penske has announced that it will be racing identical 2002 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolets in the 15-event 2002 Indy Racing League (IRL) season.
In its first full year of IRL competition, Marlboro Team Penske will once again feature two-time CART FedEx Series Champion Gil de Ferran who will be piloting the #6 car with teammate and defending Indianapolis 500 Champion Helio Castroneves driving the #3 car.
"We're looking forward to continuing our relationship with Dallara. They're a very professional organization that has responded well to this form of racing," said Tim Cindric, President of Penske Racing, Inc. "Obviously our relationship with Chevrolet and Ilmor are well documented and we are relying on their expertise to help put us in the position to challenge for the IRL Championship this season."
Chevrolet returns to open-wheel racing after an eight year absence. Team Penske raced with Chevrolet-powered engines from 1986-1993. Together they won 33 Indy car races including four Indianapolis 500's and two National Championships. Paul Tracy scored Chevrolet's most recent Indy car victory for Marlboro Team Penske at Laguna Seca Raceway in 1993.
