Panther Crewman Jerry Oberle Suffers Fatal Heart Attack

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Panther Racing Transport Operator Jerry Oberle suffered a fatal heart attack Thursday en route to Michigan International Raceway. Oberle, who has worked for Panther for nearly three years, was pronounced dead at St. John's Hospital following a traffic accident on I-69 North in Madison County. He was 68.

"This is a very sad day for Panther Racing," team co-owner John Barnes said. "Every single member of this team is a family, and we're going to grieve like a family this weekend. Our thoughts and our prayers are with Jerry's family and every ounce of success we experience from today forward is in honor of him. The best thing you can ever say about somebody is that they made a difference on the lives of those around them. Jerry Oberle made a difference at Panther Racing."

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, Oberle was northbound on I-69 when the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving crossed the median and entered the southbound lane. There was minor contact with an International box truck before the Tahoe came to rest in a ditch. A release issued by the Madison County Sheriff's Department stated that witnesses at the scene indicated that Oberle appeared to be unconscious and slumped over prior to the crash.

Funeral arrangements are set for next week in Indianapolis.
