AURORA BY OLDSMOBILE PRESENTING SPONSOR AT DISNEY
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., January 12, 1995 -- Call it the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora; Oldsmobile General Manager John Rock and IMS Events President Bill Donaldson announced today that the Aurora luxury touring sedan would provide presenting sponsorship at the Indy Racing League's inaugural event Jan. 27.
Rock last week announced Oldsmobile's commitment to a 4.0 liter Aurora V8 racing engine program for 1997 IRL competition, and today also announced -- in concert with the IRL -- that the Aurora would serve as official pace car for 1996 IRL events at Disney, Phoenix (March 24), New Hampshire (Aug. 18) and Las Vegas (Sept. 15).
"Oldsmobile's support of this event, by involving its Aurora in this unique Presenting Sponsorship package, gives the car comprehensive visibility on several fronts," Donaldson said. "The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora is a rare inaugural event that marks a new era for auto racing by announcing an entirely new league, bringing the Disney organization into the sport, along with an expanded direction for the Indianapolis 500.
"Aurora, with this sponsorship, is directly linked to this historic occasion."
"It is always great to be a part of history in the making," Rock commented. "Sponsoring the inaugural event of the exciting new Indy Racing League at Walt Disney World happens to be very appropriate for Oldsmobile. Olds has a long relationship with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway having paced the '500' eight times (1949, 1960, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1977, 1985 and 1988). We also have a long relationship with Walt Disney World with amateur and professional golf, the Oldsmobile Scramble and the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic PGA Tour event."
The Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Presented by Aurora, a 200-mile race on the new Walt Disney World Speedway, will be broadcast live by ABC Sports television and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. After practice and qualifying Thursday, Jan. 25, and Friday, Jan. 26, the race is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. EST Saturday.
The new race track is a tri-oval design located along the south perimeter of the Magic Kingdom theme park on previously undeveloped land. The track was built by IMS Events, an affiliated company of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which is also promoter of the race.
