LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL, - January 21, 1998 - The IRL kicks off its 1998 season with the first round of practice tomorrow at Walt Disney World Speedway. The track is located just outside the main gate to the Magic Kingdom.
The paddock is full with 30 IRL Indy cars. It's a different scene in the paddock at WDW Speedway from years past. Huge, brightly painted transporters line both sides of the paddock. Most of the cars are sporting new colors and sponsors in addition to the new logo for the IRL Pep Boy series.
Robbie Buhl's Team Menard car is now sponsored by Johns Manville and is painted a bright blue.
The Conseco car of Billy Boat is now British Racing Green. Foyt tested the car here in December painted battleship grey, making some call the new color, army green.
Jimmy Kite will drive the single Scandia entry. Old Navy is gone as sponsor, having been replaced by Royal Purple. Kite's car now bares a strong resemblance to the Hemelgarn entry of Buddy Lazier.
Eliseo Salazar hopes to make it to Saturday's race this year. Eliseo has had accidents the first two years at WDW and has never driven in the race. Salazar missed the first two rounds of IRL competition last year, putting him out of contention for the championship. Salazar will drive the red, white and blue factory entered Riley and Scott chassis.
Pagan Racing is back with veteran driver, Roberto Guererro. Guerrero's car was painted black during the test here in December, but is all white now. Sponsor negotiations for Pagan Racing continued late today. A sponsorship announcement is expected before race day.
Tyce Carlson's new ride, sponsored by Grenelefe Golf and Tennis Resort has a great paint job. The car's primary color is yellow with orange and white stripes running the length of the car.
Both Billy Roe's and Alfonso Giaffone's cars will be easy to spot at WDW. Both cars are painted flourescent orange.
Practice will take place at WDW Speedway tomorrow for IRL cars. The US FF2000 series will qualify tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. IRL drivers will draw for their qualification line-up tomorrow night at a party at Pleasure Island.
