Nazareth, PA (August 29, 2004) Alex Barron and the No. 51 Red Bull Cheever Racing crew earned 12th position in the Firestone Indy 225. Rookie teammate Ed Carpenter fell out of the race early due to an ill-handling car.
Alex Barron in his Chevy-powered Dallara battled through many misfortunes on the 1-mile oval at Nazareth Speedway, but pulled through earning his fifth consecutive top-12 finish.
"What didn't go wrong today?" Barron said after the race. "First we lost my water bottle, then the gearbox, then the electronics. On the good side, we had great balance in the car and really good pit stops. That's what kept us in the race despite all the problems we ran into."
Ed Carpenter was not so fortunate. He struggled with a poorly balanced car for 143 laps before losing control of the No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing car. Carpenter was checked and released from the infield care center with no injuries.
"We were struggling all day and letting cars go through," explained Carpenter. "I was going through Turn 2 just like normal, and I got a huge push right in the corner. The thing took off out of line and into the marbles, and then I was just a passenger."
Carpenter's DNF puts an end to his steady streak of four consecutive race finishes.
Red Bull Cheever Racing owner Eddie Cheever Jr. was confident that his veteran driver, Barron, could have earned a top-10 finish if not for the problems he encountered.
"Alex was hampered by a problem with the gearbox early on and was stuck in sixth gear," Cheever explained. "The car was handling very well though and I know we could have finished much higher up than we did. We had awesome pit stops and gained positions every time we came out of the pits."
Red Bull Cheever Racing takes the green flag at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday, September 12 at 1:30 pm (EDT).
