SCHECKTER TAKES EIGHTH, LEADING VISION RACING IN QUALIFYING FOR THE INDY JAPAN 300
MOTEGI, Japan - Vision Racing driver Tomas Scheckter will lead his team to battle tomorrow afternoon as he has qualified in the eighth spot for the Indy Japan 300. Scheckter's teammates in A.J. Foyt IV and Ed Carpenter will start 14th and 16th, respectively, on the 1.5-mile oval of Twin Ring Motegi.
Scheckter will be making his second-straight eighth place start this season in the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone. Most recently on the streets of St. Petersburg, Scheckter started from the eighth spot and finished the race in sixth. A similar run tomorrow at Motegi would give Scheckter his third straight top-ten finish for the season and second overall top ten at Twin Ring Motegi.
Starting 14th in the No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, Foyt will be making his career-best start at Motegi in his fourth start here. His previous best finish is 14th, of which he'll look to surpass as he challenges for his second-straight running finish of the 2007 IndyCar Series season.
Carpenter, in the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone, will start the Indy Japan 300 from the 16th spot tomorrow. This matches his best starting position at the track. He'll be looking to complete his first race at Motegi in three prior attempts.
The team's practice sessions proved to be fruitful this weekend as Scheckter, Carpenter and Foyt ran fifth, 11th and 13th, overall. The strong showing has all three Vision Racing pilots confident in their race setup and eager to start the race.
Look for an action-packed Indy Japan 300 set to air Saturday afternoon, April 21st at 3:00 p.m. (EDT).
Qualifying/Practice Results and Quotes: (April 20, 2007)
Tomas Scheckter - No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying and practice: "It was a decent run. I was flat-out all the way around and gave it all I could so it was good. The car was a little loose going in a bit, but I stayed with it and turned out okay. We had a good practice session today and got to work on race runs and put up some good times so I'm looking forward to the race."
A.J. Foyt IV - No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying and practice: "The weekend has been really good for us. My teammates have helped me out a ton so far. The guys gave me a great car right off the truck so it got my confidence going right off the bat so a lot of this goes to those guys. In qualifying we put in our quickest lap of the weekend so we aren't going to start at the front of the field, but it was still a pretty good lap."
Ed Carpenter - No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
On qualifying: "It could have been just a little bit better, but it was pretty close to where we practiced. We've had a pretty good racecar this weekend so I'm still looking forward to the race and we'll just have to focus on moving up through the field when we get going tomorrow."
