Contact Eliminates Sharp in Bridgestone Indy Japan 300

It was not the day that Scott Sharp had hoped for in his fourth appearance at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit. A former winner on the 1.5-mile oval, Sharp started the weekend strong with a top-five showing in the two practice sessions leading up to today's Bridgestone Indy Japan 300. He saw his day come to an early close on Lap 41 of the 200-lap event when the series veteran found himself in an uncharacteristic position. Sharp spun on a restart following a lengthy 15-lap caution period. The incident resulted in contact between PJ Chesson and Jeff Simmons with Simmons making contact with Sharp. The #8 Delphi machine sustained heavy damage to the rear. Sharp was running in 13 th position at the time after battling understeer in the opening stages of the race.

Scott Sharp - #8 Delphi Dallara /Honda/Firestone:
"Obviously, I am heartbroken to throw all this away. Certainly we felt like we had a great chance today with the Delphi car after strong practice sessions. I am not sure exactly what happened. I spent a lot of time warming the tires up as everyone else did with the 10 or 12 laps we were running under caution. I did a bunch of burn-outs and got everything warmed up. As everyone accelerated, I accelerated with them and all of a sudden the car just started to come around. I wasn't that high on the revs or anything for that to happen. It's very strange."
