Matsuura Battles Back to a Ninth-Place Finish in Japan
It was an eventful day for Kosuke Matsuura, who battled back from going a lap down early in the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300 to claim a ninth-place result. Matsuura, who qualified ninth for his home race, regained his lap on an out-of-sequence pit stop. He worked his way back up through the field to sixth position before having to pit for a splash-and-go with six laps remaining [Lap 194]. The result was Matsuura's best finish to date this season, and his second top-10 run in the past four races.
Kosuke Matsuura, #55 Panasonic ARTA Panoz/Honda/Firestone:
"This was one of the most important races for us but we didn't have a good enough result. First of all, I made a mistake on the first restart and nearly spun in Turn Three and lost a lot of positions there. After that I was running quite good, but I lost a couple of positions on my first pit stop and after the first stint, I was a lap down. We were able to get back on the lead lap with about fifty laps to go. I was pushing really hard to get back into a good position but I had to stop for a splash of fuel near the end and finished ninth. The car was really good, especially the last two stints, and this is very good for the next race -- the Indianapolis 500."
Tom Anderson, Managing Director:
"The Panasonic car came home ninth today. All in all it was a good day as a lot of people had problems. There were a lot of things on the race track to dodge, and we stayed clear of all of that. It was down to fuel mileage at the end. We were able to get our lap back late in the race when we stopped a few laps earlier than the leaders. We were heading towards the front but we had to pit late to get a couple of gallons. It was a good run and a good momentum builder going into Indy. Congratulations to Honda on their victory. The Firestone tires were great all day."
