Panther Drivers Close in First Practice Session

MOTEGI, Japan -- Panther Racing drivers Tomas Scheckter and Tomas Enge ran similar speeds Thursday during the first day of practice for the Bridgestone Indy Japan 300. Both drivers focused on race setup during the opening day of practice at Twin Ring Motegi, and will look to improve their speeds before qualifications tomorrow.

Tomas Scheckter put together the top lap time from the Panther stable, with a speed of 197.706 mph, 27.6774 seconds. Scheckter's speed was the 16th quickest lap posted on the day. Tomas Enge, in his first day on Twin Ring Motegi's 1.5-mile oval, posted a best lap of 197.618 mph, 27.6898 seconds. Enge's laps speed ranked him 17th on the speed chart.

Qualifications for the Saturday race will take place Friday at 12:30 p.m. local Japan time.

Tomas Enge:

"It's a new track for me and in the first session the grip was bad because the track was very dirty. I was just trying to get used to the rhythm of this track because it's something unique that I've never done before. But in the second practice we improved a lot and we are pretty happy with our race setup, so let's see what we can do tomorrow."

Tomas Scheckter:

"The car was understeering pretty bad and that was slowing us down. We'll find some more speed tomorrow in our Pennzoil Chevrolet once we work with the engineers, but today we focused on our race setup. (Race Engineer David) Cripps really knows how I like the car, for sure, and the more laps we can turn in practice the better off we'll be for qualifications and the race on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it."
