MOTEGI, Japan (April 13, 2003) - In front of a full house at the Indy Japan 300, Red Bull Cheever Racing driver Buddy Rice overcame several challenges to finish 13th in the IRL IndyCar Series debut at Twin Ring Motegi.
A strong run early in the race, along with the team's pit strategy, put the No. 52 Red Bull Chevy in third place. Rice tried to get a jump on the second-place car on the restart on lap 40 but did a half-spin sending him to the end of the line. As he was fighting his way back the gearbox failed requiring a lengthy pit stop where the crew installed a new gearbox in seven minutes.
"Today we survived a demolition derby" said Rice, who was one of 13 drivers to take the checkered flag. "The Red Bull Cheever guys did an excellent job changing the gearbox and getting me back out there so we could score some points. We put more miles on the Chevy engine, and made it to the end. It wasn't exactly what we were looking for. We'll just keep trying to look forward, and see what happens."
The next race on the IRL IndyCar Series schedule is the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25. Before the month of May kicks off on May 4 though, Red Bull Cheever Racing has a busy test schedule with dates booked at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Nashville Superspeedway.
Red Bull Cheever Racing, based in Indianapolis, is the brainchild of 1998 Indy 500 champion Eddie Cheever Jr. A leader in American motorsports, the IRL IndyCar Series team is built on Cheever's experience in Formula One, sports cars and open-wheel oval racing.
