Dario Franchitti Picks Up First IRL IndyCar Series Victory at The Milwaukee Mile
Dario Franchitti of Andretti Green Racing took the checkered flag in today's race, the IRL's inaugural visit to The Milwaukee Mile. In a race where maximum downforce was used, allowing for high speeds, Franchitti was able to climb from seventh on the grid at the start of the race to take his first IRL victory.
This was the first time that Firestone has equipped IRL cars for a race at Milwaukee and the Firehawk racing radials rose to the challenge. The Firehawk tires proved their ability to remain consistent and deliver performance and grip when it mattered most. The one-mile asphalt oval with almost no banking was no match for the advanced technology Firestone puts into each and every one of its racing tires.
"The tires were perfect," said Franchitti in victory circle. "There was no problem with the tires at all. We were able to run a long, long stint on them."
Quote from Joe Barbieri, Manager, Firestone Racing: "The Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225 allowed fans to see quite a bit of exciting action as the IRL took to this track for the first time in its history. There were five different leaders, plenty of high-speed action and the few incidents can be accredited to the talent of these drivers along with the trust they have in their Firestone tires. Although the track and ambient temperatures during the race were the highest teams saw all weekend, the Firehawks held up well, as stated by race winner Dario Franchitti. Congratulations to Dario on his first IRL victory and to Andretti Green Racing as it continues to dominate this season."
Firestone Performance Award winner: Helio Castroneves of Marlboro Team Penske earned the $10,000 Firestone Performance Award for leading lap 96 of today's race. The award commemorates the fact that Firestone has competed in every IRL IndyCar Series event since the league's inception in 1996. Today's race was the 96th in league history.
Race temperatures ranged from 105 to 108 degrees track and from 75 to 82 degrees ambient (F).
Race temperatures ranged from 41 to 42 degrees track and from 24 to 28 degrees ambient (C).
