HERTA DRIVES TO SIXTH-PLACE FINISH IN XM SATELLITE RADIO CAR
WEST ALLIS, Wis. (July 24, 2005) - XM Satellite Radio driver Bryan Herta recorded his best finish in the last four races at Sunday's running of the ABC Supply Co./A.J. Foyt 225 at The Milwaukee Mile. Herta finished in sixth place and remains ninth in the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series championship.
Herta wasted no time showing the strength of his car by moving up three spots on the opening lap of the race. Herta was running in the eighth position when he made his first pit stop under yellow-flag conditions on lap 60, coming in for a load of fuel, four tires and a small tire pressure adjustment. Herta re- entered the race in eighth position, where he would stay for the next 70 laps until his second pit stop.
Trying to move up in the pack with pit strategy, the XM Satellite Radio crew went with a timed stop on their second trip to pit lane and got Herta out in sixth position. On what was supposed to be his final pit stop of the day on lap 170, Herta narrowly missed the car driven by Helio Castroneves who pulled out of his pit while Herta was coming in. Consequentially, Herta missed his pit box and had to come in on the next lap where he took four tires and enough fuel to finish the race, grabbing his seventh top-10 finish of the season.
Sam Hornish Jr. won his second race of the season, followed by Herta's AGR teammates Dario Franchitti, who finished second, Tony Kanaan in fourth place and Dan Wheldon in fifth place. Tomas Scheckter finished third.
The next race on the IndyCar Series schedule takes place Sunday, July 31, from Michigan International Speedway. Live coverage of the 200-lap Firestone Indy 400 begins at 3 p.m. (EDT) on ABC. It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers on Extreme XM, channel 152.
Bryan Herta, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "This is a big sense of relief to get a better race underneath us compared to what we have had the last three. Although sixth isn't what we came here for, we were competitive and the XM Satellite Radio car was on the lead lap all day. We just really struggled to get track position. We never really had good track position and that hurt us a little bit."
George Klotz, Team Manager, #7 XM Satellite Radio Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "The guys did a great job, Bryan drove his butt off and the XM Satellite Radio car was good. It's just good to be back in the game again. That's what we really needed to do. Obviously, we want to win, but we had to get back in the game again and that's what we did this weekend."
