Fernandez Will Start 10th in Michigan Indy 400

Adrian Fernandez will make his ninth career major open-wheel start at Michigan International Speedway from Row Five of the grid after qualifying 10th* for Sunday's Michigan Indy 400. Fernandez, who last competed on the 2-mile oval in 2001, was focusing on race setup during the three practice sessions prior to MBNA Pole Qualifying. He claimed his best result at Michigan in 1995 with a third-place run.

Fernandez will be looking to claim his seventh consecutive top-10 finish in tomorrow's 200-lap race.

*Fernandez qualified 11th but moved up a spot when second-place qualifier Helio Castroneves was sent to the back of the grid for an engine change after MBNA Pole Qualifying.

Weather: For the start of practice, mostly sunny with temperatures at 70 F and winds out of the west at eight mph; temperatures at 73 F at the start of MBNA Pole Qualifying.

Practice Recap: Fernandez posted the 14th-fastest time in the morning practice session with a best lap of 33.7985 213.207 mph.

Adrian Fernandez, #5 Quaker State/Telmex/Tecate Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone:

"We went two directions today with Kosuke's [Matsuura] car and my car. We haven't been very good on restarts and in traffic the last few races. We needed to make sure that we found some answers, so his setup is different than mine and we were expecting to qualify not so good. The race is another thing. If Kosuke can maintain and stay in traffic with those speeds, then I think we have found something pretty positive. We went the direction to make the car more stable for the race and we'll see. At the end of the day, it is something that we need to get an answer to for the future."
