Qualifying finds Rice 18th as Hornish takes new Chevy to fourth at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 26, 2003) -- Buddy Rice will start the Firestone Indy 400 from 18th position, qualifying the No. 52 Red Bull Cheever Racing Chevy/Dallara at 33.3599 seconds, 215.82 mph.

Hornish, the sole entry with the new Gen IV Chevy Indy V8 qualified fourth at 32.4563 seconds, 221.83 mph.

"We knew there was relief coming and that gave us a lot of hope." Rice said. "Hornish has made a big impression this weekend with the way he is running. I think it's going to be a big relief for all the Chevy teams to get the new Gen IV. For qualifying today we just trimmed the car down and it's the fastest we've gone the whole weekend. The hope right now is that we'll get the engine for St. Louis, so we're preparing our car for that."

The next engine will go to the second-best Chevy team in the point standings after the Michigan race. Currently Red Bull Cheever Racing holds that position with a 34 point lead over Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. Robbie Buhl will have to win the race and Buddy Rice will have to finish last in order for Red Bull Cheever Racing to lose their advantage.
