New Chevy fastest in practice at Michigan

BROOKLYN, Mich. (July 25, 2003) -- The Red Bull Cheever Racing crew was smiling today after practice at Michigan International Raceway, despite posting the 18th fastest lap with Buddy Rice in the No.52 Dallara/Chevy.

The crew cheered on the fastest driver of the day, Sam Hornish Jr., who drove the first laps against the competition with the new Gen IV Chevy Indy V8. Hornish topped the speed charts at 32.1977 seconds, 223.618 mph.

The new engine will go to the second-best Chevy team in the point standings at the IndyCar Series' next event at Gateway on August 10. With a 34 point lead over the next closest Chevy team, Red Bull Cheever Racing and Buddy Rice are likely to receive the next Gen IV Chevy.

"So far this weekend has been pretty good," said Rice after practice. "With anticipation of St. Louis, we're going to try to get through this weekend without any problems and score some more points. We have a good racecar right now. The car is good in traffic right now, and that's all we're worried about. We can run flat out all the way around without any issues just like everyone else. We need to make sure we can run all three lanes, so that's what we'll be working on for tomorrow."
