INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 3, 2003) -- Training for his rookie run at the Indianapolis 500, Vitor Meira completed the 13.5-mile Indy 500 Festival mini-marathon today. He crossed the finish line in downtown Indianapolis at the one hour and thirty minute mark.
A portion of the 13.5-mile course includes the fabled 2.5 miles at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"What a great experience. When I ran past the start/finish line at the track I stopped to touch the bricks. I also waved to the Team Menard guys setting up in pit lane. The start was wild. There were so many people. I was lucky I was one of the first people to start. It was more crowded than the start of the Indy 500 where there are only 33 other competitors, not 25,000. I was pleased with my finish, it was much better than I calculated. I am very glad I did this. It was fun. The Indy 500 will now be the 502.5 for me since I already got one lap of racing completed around the track today."
Meira, a 26-year-old Brazilian, is entered to drive the No. 22 Team Menard/Johns Manville Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone in the 87th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 25. Opening day of practice is set for May 4, with pole qualifying on May 10.
One of the founding teams of the IRL IndyCar Series, Team Menard has two championships, 10 wins and an all-time record of 24 pole positions to its credit. Owned by John Menard, the Indianapolis-based team is supported by Menards, Johns Manville, Chevrolet, Menard Engine Group, Dallara, Firestone and Menard Cheever Technologies.
