McGehee Making Rapid Progress In Recovery From Injury
INDIANAPOLIS, Monday, June 25, 2001 - Indy Racing driver Robby McGehee is continuing his speedy recovery from a broken lower left leg suffered during the Casino Magic 500 on June 9 at Texas Motor Speedway and hopes to return to racing in July.
McGehee, from St. Louis, was injured in a three-car accident on Lap 196 of the 200-lap Indy Racing Northern Light Series race won by Scott Sharp.
"Everything is healing well," McGehee said. "I just got a new brace, one that will fit under my (driving) suit."
McGehee wants to return to the cockpit of the No. 10 Cahill Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone at the Ameristar Casino Indy 200 on July 8 at Kansas Speedway, pending approval from Indy Racing League officials and Dr. Henry Bock, Indy Racing League director of medical services.
1999 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year McGehee continues an aggressive rehabilitation program that includes stretching, leg lifts, strengthening, and exercises in a swimming pool.
"I'm just trying to get out and move around every day," McGehee said. "I'm trying to exercise my quads (quadriceps) to make sure I don't wither away."
McGehee said he has received many get-well wishes from drivers, teams and fans, including cards, e-mail and flowers.
"The support is unbelievable," he said. "I haven't figured out how I'm going to thank everyone. I didn't know I had this many friends."
Get-well wishes can be sent to McGehee at these addresses:
Robby McGehee 47 Picardy Lane St. Louis, MO 63124
A further update of McGehee's condition and driving status will be provided when available.
