LUYENDYK LEADS ENTRY LIST FOR SAMSONITE 200
INDIANAPOLIS, June 18, 1997 -- Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk leads the entry list of Indy Racing League drivers set to scale the Colorado Rockies for the Samsonite 200 at Pikes Peak International Raceway June 27 - 29. The entry list of 24 drivers vying for the $1 million plus event purse includes local favorite Buzz Calkins, winner of the inaugural Indy 200 at Walt Disney World and 1996 IRL co- champion along with Scott Sharp, who is also listed on an entry. Also bidding for another IRL win are Jim Guthrie, winner of the 1997 Phoenix 200, and Eddie Cheever, Jr. who took first place at the 1997 Indy 200 at Walt Disney World. IRL standout Tony Stewart, pole sitter at last year's Indianapolis 500, the True Value 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, the Phoenix 200, and the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World, will be looking for his first IRL win at the Pikes Peak track. The Samsonite 200 entry list also includes Indy Racing League veterans Buddy Lazier, Scott Goodyear, Roberto Guerrero, Davey Hamilton, Eliseo Salazar, John Paul, Jr., Alessandro Zampedri, Stephan Gregoire, Mark Dismore and Marco Greco. Rookies Kenny Brack, Affonso Giaffone, Vincenzo Sospiri, Jim Guthrie, Robbie Groff, Dr. Jack Miller and Greg Ray are also hoping to take home their share of the Pikes Peak purse. Pikes Peak International Raceway is a brand-new 1-mile race track in Fountain, Colo., and is nestled at the foot of the majestic 14,110 foot Pikes Peak Mountain. Fans will have a breathtaking view not only of the Colorado Rockies to the west, and the Great Plains to the east but also of the Indy Racing League race cars on the tri-oval race track itself. Race Weekend starts with IRL practice on June 27, followed by PPG Pole qualifying on June 28. On June 29, The Samsonite 200 will be broadcast live on ABC Sports at 3 p.m. EDT (1 p.m. local time) and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network. Joining the IRL cars in Colorado will be the U.S. Formula Ford 2000s, and the STAR Formula Mazda Series.
