Luis Diaz to take part in Rookie Orientation Program at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for Target Chip Ganassi Racing
Indianapolis, Indiana, April 23rd , 2004 -- Target Chip Ganassi Racing announced today that Mexican driver Luis Diaz will take the helm of one of the team's four Toyota/ G- Forces entered in the 88th annual Indianapolis 500, for this Monday's Rookie Orientation Program at the 2.5 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The test will be a one day only event to give Luis Diaz the chance to get acquainted with an IndyCar and the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, while helping the team in their preparations for the Memorial Day weekend race. There are no plans at this time, to field a third car for Target Chip Ganassi Racing's quest for the coveted Indy 500 crown.
"It really is an honor to be invited by Target Chip Ganassi Racing to test their IndyCar at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway," says Mexico's Luis Diaz. "Mike Hull (Team Manager) called me two days ago with the offer to participate in the test and I could not have been more excited to be given such a great opportunity. It will be my first experience with both the Toyota/ G-Force IndyCar and the track. I can't thank Chip Ganassi and the team enough for showing confidence in my abilities to make a contribution to their efforts for this year's Indy 500."
Luis Diaz comes directly from Chip Ganassi Racing's stable of talented drivers, currently sharing driving duties for one of two cars being fielded by the CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing team in the Rolex Grand American Sports Car series which fields two cars in the Daytona Prototype class. In 2003, Diaz ran his second full season in the Toyota Atlantic series and one race in the CART series.
"Luis (Diaz) is talented and driven and has earned the opportunity to get his first taste of an IndyCar and experience the unique Indianapolis Motor Speedway 2.5 mile oval," says Target Racing team owner Chip Ganassi. "Luis comes from an openwheel back ground and since joining our Grand Am Sports Car program, has proved to be hard working and talented. I am certainly that he will be an asset to the team's preparations for the Indianapolis 500. We do not have any plans at this time to run him in the race, but you never know what can happen. For any driver, this kind of experience can never hurt."
Following Monday's ROP Open Test with Luis Diaz, Target Chip Ganassi Racing will continue their preparations for the 88th Indianapolis 500 with 2003 IndyCar series Champion Scott Dixon and teammate Darren Manning at the Open Test on April 27-28th at the 2.5 mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
