SCHMIDT CAPTURES FIRST CAREER PPG POLE AT HOME
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 25, 1999 - Sam Schmidt captured his first Pep Boys Indy Racing League PPG Pole Saturday in qualifying for Sunday's Vegas.com 500 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Schmidt, from Las Vegas, turned a lap of 25.780 sec., 209.465 mph in the Sprint PCS G Force/Aurora/Firestone on the 1.5-mile tri-oval. While this is Schmidt's first career pole, it is the second time Treadway Racing has taken the top spot for an Indy Racing event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Former Treadway racing driver Arie Luyendyk sat on the pole for the inaugural event in 1996.
"It's pretty huge," Schmidt said about capturing the PPG Pole. "That last lap I was on the ragged edge of losing it. With the level of competition, that's what you have to do to get the pole."
Mark Dismore qualified second at 25.825, 209.100 in the MCI World Com Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear. This is Dismore's fourth front row start of the 1999 season.
Defending Pep Boys Indy Racing League series champion Kenny Brack qualified third at 25.889, 208.583 in the A.J. Foyt Power Team Racing G Force/Aurora/Goodyear. Brack's best start of the season comes behind the wheel of a G Force chassis after the team switched from a Dallara for this race.
Pep Boys Indy Racing League points leader Greg Ray will start fourth after posting a lap of 25.916, 208.365 in the Glidden-Menards Dallara/Aurora/Firestone. Scott Goodyear, 44 points behind Ray in the league standings, qualified fifth at 25.921, 208.325 in the Pennzoil Panther G Force/Aurora/Goodyear.
The 208-lap, 312-mile race starts at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) Sunday and will be televised live on ESPN2.
Eliseo Salazar is the only previous winner of the Vegas.com 500 entered in this year's race. Salazar, winner in 1997, qualified 22nd with a lap of 26.466, 204.035 in the Nienhouse Motorsports Racing G Force/Aurora/Firestone.
Two drivers making their Indy Racing debuts this weekend will start side by side. Willy T. Ribbs qualified 25th at 26.840, 201.192 in the Cole Bros. Water-Team Losi-Fast Rod G Force/Aurora/Firestone. Swede Niclas Jonsson will start in the 26th spot after running 27.138, 198.983 in the Blueprint Racing-Zmax G Force/Aurora/Firestone.
