Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing and Billy Boat Qualifying Notes, Saturday, Oct. 10
Driving the No. 11 Conseco/A.J. Foyt Dallara-Aurora on Goodyear tires, Billy Boat earned the seventh PPG Pole Award of his Pep Boys IRL career today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It is his sixth PPG Pole this season, which is a record for poles in one IRL season. He also set an IRL record by earning four consecutive poles. In every race he qualified for this season, Billy has started from the front row (Phoenix-second; Indy-pole; Texas-second; New Hampshire-pole; Pikes Peak-pole; Atlanta-pole, Texas-pole, Las Vegas-pole).
Billy Boat won his first career Pep Boys IRL pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last year with a 207.413mph lap. This year he won the PPG Pole with a 214.567mph lap. Boat commented about the faster speeds: "Every year the IRL cars get better and the tires get better. You just add up all the improvements. It's pretty consistent. We've been probably five miles per hour, on average, faster at every track this year."
Billy Boat earned $20,000 and the PPG Pole Award for winning back-to-back poles. His chief mechanic, Craig Baranouski, earned $10,000, a trophy and a Tag Heuer watch as the True Value Pole Winning Chief Mechanic.
Billy Boat about qualifying: "We haven't had a race car that was right since we've been here. We made some pretty dramatic changes to our setup this morning. We got close, but we were still not comfortable. We were actually loose, but I knew when the race track heated up that it should come to us. It did. I was able to run the car as hard as I could. I didn't think we would run as fast as we did. I figured we could run 213 and a half. We'll take the 214, though."
