Meira Finishes 10th at Kentucky; Franchitti Flips Over Matsuura After Checkered
Kosuke's 11th-place Finish Overshadowed By Post Race Accident
SPARTA, Ky. (August 11, 2007) -- A relatively uneventful Meijer Indy 300 for Panther Racing got interesting after the checkered flag, when Andretti Green Racing driver Dario Franchitti -- unaware the race had concluded - launched his No. 27 machine over the back of Kosuke Matsuura, who had slowed after completing the final lap.
The post-race run-in had no affect on Matsuura's 11th place finish, but the damage to his No. 55 Panasonic Panther Dallara was significant. Franchitti apologized to Matsuura in the Delphi safety truck following the accident.
The race was another good one for Matsuura, who narrowly missed out on his fourth Top Ten of the year.
Team veteran Vitor Meira finished in 10th position, one spot ahead of Matsuura. Meira's Delphi Panther car was pushing early in the race, and he had a difficult time climbing higher than his 12th-place qualification position. The result was Meira's ninth Top Ten finish this season in 14 starts.
"The balance of the Delphi car was good today, but we still need more speed. It was very important for us to finish the race today. It is nice to be inside the Top Ten, but the Panther team knows that we're going to get better. I'm really looking forward to Sonoma because we've been so good on the road courses this year."
"After the checkered I let off, and (Dario Franchitti) didn't see me, and he hit me. I didn't do anything different from what I normally do after a race. When we were getting in the safety car, he said, 'My fault.' He understood what exactly happened and he apologized to me about that. The race is over so there is nothing more we can do."
