SPARTA, KY (August 10, 2002) -- Notes from the Belterra Casino Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway:

This year's Belterra Indy 300 marks the Indy Racing Leagues third visit to the 1.48-mile superspeedway. Buddy Lazier has won both races at Kentucky.

Infiniti Pro Series drivers Aaron Fike and Ed Carpenter will pull double duty this weekend, competing at Kentucky Speedway and Salem Speedway. After qualifying in their Infiniti Pro Series cars at Kentucky, the pair will head to Salem Speedway, 95 miles away, to compete in the USAC Sprint Car Series.

Kentucky Speedway was repaved during the offseason, allowing drivers to take a lower line around the track. The most noticeable bump is at the start finish line, which upsets the rear of the car as it passes.

Of the 25 drivers entered in this weekend's race, 16 have scored an Indy Racing League victory.

During the second Indy racing practice session, the fire alarm sounded in the control tower causing spotters on the roof to have second thoughts about their perch atop that building.

Coming into this weekend's event at Kentucky Speedway, the track record stood at 24.636 mph, 219.191 mph, set by Scott Goodyear in August of 2000. Fourteen cars surpassed Goodyear's mark in Saturday's first practice session.

Actor turned Infiniti Pro Series driver Jason Priestley served as Al Unser Jr's spotter during the Saturday morning practice session. Priestley said that he emulated the work of Indy racing driver Tony Renna who works as Priestley's spotter in the Infiniti Series. Unser said that Priestley would continue to work as his spotter throughout the weekend.
