Felipe Giaffone takes victory aboard G Force in Kentucky.
Felipe Giaffone earned his first IRL career victory at Kentucky Speedway today, providing the G Force chassis with its second win for the year and placing the Brazilian driver within reach of the championship lead.
The Mo Nunn Racing driver dominated the race, taking the lead for the first time on lap 27, and leading 124 of the 200 laps.
In fact, a G Force chassis actually led 159 of the 200 laps with pole sitter Sarah Fisher and IRL rookie Will Langhorne also taking turns at the front of the pack.
"Yeah, I think this was one of those weekends when everything worked great," Giaffone said.
"I was just a little concerned to see how much Sam (Hornish) was pushing me at the end, but I think he was trying hard at that point.
"It was like a perfect weekend because our car was good since the first practice even though we didn't test here.
"The only problem we had all weekend was a mistake I made on my first pit stop today. I got a little confused and just missed our pit stall. That set us back, but I just put my head down and thanks to all the good work by the guys on my car, I was able to drive to the front without any problems.
"My car was as good during the whole race as it's been all year. I knew Sam Hornish was going to be a hard guy to beat. It was tough, but we did it. We were so close to getting our first victory, and we finally got it today."
The victory by Giaffone has lifted him to within 17 points of the championship lead with only three rounds remaining. The win is the second G Force victory of the year, following the win by Jeff Ward at Texas in round six.
"Now we are in position for the championship."
"Today, I had to be aggressive because I had a good car that I knew was capable of winning a race
"Now we got the first win, we can use the momentum for a legitimate shot at the championship."
Giaffone's Mo Nunn Racing crew put their driver into the lead on the final pit stop on lap 162, beating Hornish out of the pits. Despite strong pressure, the G Force driver was able to hold to the lead for the remainder of the race. The G Force cars were one-two in the early stages, Sarah Fisher leading Giaffone.
"We maintained our lead from the start until the first stop, which was slow and put us back a bit," Fisher said.
"I had a great time racing today, especially with Alex Barron. We passed each other back and forth several times and then battled it out for a long stint. I got some good racing laps in today and some good experience."
Other G Force drivers drivers included Fisher's team-mate Robbie Buhl (10th), Jeff Ward (16th), George Mack (17th) and Will Langhorne (18th)
