Archipelago/Motorola crew propels Herta to third place finish at Kentucky Speedway
SPARTA, Ky. (August 17, 2003) -- Lightning fast pit stops by the Archipelago/Motorola crew moved Bryan Herta through the field to a third-place finish today at Kentucky Speedway.
After starting the race from the 13th position, Herta drove to tenth early in the race. When he pitted on lap 58, Herta was running 11th. After the green flag pit stop and a couple of fast laps on cold tires Herta found himself in fifth place. During the next green flag stint Herta lost a lap to eventual winner Sam Hornish, but the Archipelago/Motorola team persevered and made up two more positions on the second green flag pit stop. When the only yellow flag of the day flew on lap 147, Herta came onto pit road one-lap down and in third place. After the pit stop was done, the Archipelago/Motorola car was in front of the leader, allowing him to pass around the pace car a take up position at the tail-end of the lead lap. After the restart, Herta ran the remaining 42 laps in third to earn his third top-five finish of the season.
Sam Hornish dominated the Belterra Casino Indy 300, leading 181 of the 200 laps to earn his first win of the 2003 season. Scott Dixon finished second. Herta's teammates Tony Kanaan and Dan Wheldon also collected top-ten finishes, coming home in sixth and eighth, respectively.
The Indy Racing League IndyCarTM Series points championship is heating up as summer comes to an end. Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan held onto to his points lead with his sixth place finish. Kanaan leads Helio Castroneves 385-377. Scott Dixon in third in the tight race, just 12 points back with 373 points and Gil de Ferran is in fourth with 372.
The IRL IndyCar Series moves to Nazareth Speedway a week from today for the Firestone Indy 225. The 13th round of 16-race championship will be shown live at 3 p.m. (EDT) on ABC Sports.
Bryan Herta, #27 Archipelago/Motorola Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"It was a great run for the Archipelago/Motorola team. The guys gave me incredible pit stops and I was driving as hard as I could out there. The last three weeks have been horrible and last week was the worst with the accident in the pits. This is just a great confidence booster for me and all of the guys on the team to come back and get a good result. I want to say "hi" to Anton Julian from the Kelley team who was hurt last week. I want him to know we are all thinking about him and we can't wait to see him back at the race track."
Kyle Moyer, Team Manager, Archipelago/Motorola
"We gained a lot of positions in the pits and on our out-laps. Initially we were a little disappointed the last pit stop was under yellow because we were making up so many places during the green flag stops, but the guys got Bryan out ahead of Sam (Hornish, race leader) and we were able to make up a lap in the pits. We had a great race car, Bryan did a great job driving it and the guys made some passes for him on pit lane."
