Fort Wayne, IN - The Kelley Racing team is heading to Phoenix, Arizona for this weekend's Pep Boys Indy Racing League race. Last year, the Phoenix race marked the team's first win. Scott Sharp (car #8) led 30 laps for his second career victory and first victory as a driver for Kelley Racing. Teammate Mark Dismore (car #28) managed a 16th place finish after a mid-race incident sent him to the garage area for a new nose.
The team enters the second race of the 1999 season with the goal of capturing the Pep Boys IRL championship. Mark Dismore qualified 10th and finished 6th in Orlando. Scott Sharp was the fastest car in practice, qualified on the pole, led the most laps and set the fastest race lap on the way to a 4th place finish. A final pit stop under green eliminated his chances for his first victory of the season. Scott is 3rd in points after picking up the extra pole and lap leader points.
Team thoughts as they prepare for the Phoenix 200:
Scott Sharp: "Phoenix is a difficult track. You need to hustle the car around this place. I like the one-mile ovals. Setup is critical and I think we learned a lot in the test last month (Sharp was second quick in the 'Test In The West')."
Mark Dismore: "The fast way around this track is to be smooth and have a really good handling car. The track is shaped a little like an egg. The first and second turns are pretty tight while the third and fourth turns a are flat out. We had a really good test here and I just hope we can repeat our speed this weekend." (Mark was the quickest driver in the 'Test In The West.')
Tom Kelley, team owner: "We achieved our (team's) first victory at this track. We feel like Phoenix has been very kind to us and we are looking forward to the race. "
David Cripps, technical director: "We've tested here in the off season. We had a real strong test in February. We are cautiously optimistic regarding our chances."
Kelley Racing will race at Phoenix on March 28th. You can view the race live at 4pm EST on FOX SportsNet. For more information visit the Kelley Racing web site at www.kelleyracing.com.
