PEP BOYS INDY RACING LEAGUE ANNOUNCES FINES FOLLOWING DURA-LUBE 200 AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

INDIANAPOLIS, March 27, 1998 - The Pep Boys Indy Racing League announced today that Kelley Racing has been fined a total of $20,000 and 7 points for two violations that occurred during the Dura-Lube 200 on March 22, 1998 at Phoenix International Raceway. Kelley Racing, and driver Scott Sharp, have been fined 7 points and $15,000 because their car failed the post race fuel capacity inspection. In addition, Kelley Racing has been fined $5,000 for unsportmanlike conduct which occurred on the lap 197 restart. "These were serious safety and competition rules violations but did not affect the outcome of the race," said Leo Mehl, executive director of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. "As a fan's letter to me said after the race, 'we were deprived of a great racing opportunity.'" Teams have the option of sealing the fuel cell after passing the pre-race inspection. Kelley Racing elected to not seal their cell. Post race inspection at both Phoenix and their Indianapolis race shop confirmed the extra fuel capacity. The unsportsmanlike conduct fine was assessed for driver Mark Dismore's failure to obey race officials' repeated commands to close up the field prior to the restart, and an unacceptably slow restart speed of approximately 30 mph. "Rules exist for competition and safety reasons and violations will not be tolerated," said Brian Barnhart, director of racing operations for the Pep Boys Indy Racing League. The $20,000 fine will be donated to the American Red Cross, the official charity of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League.
