INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (July 26, 1999) -- Fresh off their first IRL win of the season in Atlanta, the Kelley Racing team looks to do well this upcoming race weekend at the famous "Monster Mile" oval track in Dover, Delaware. Driver Scott Sharp and the Delphi team will be defending their title from last year's inaugural race, while teammate Mark Dismore and the MCI WorldCom crew still searches for their first career IRL win. Sharp, who is currently 21 points behind IRL point's leader Scott Goodyear, is aiming for another win and to continue gaining momentum in the quest for the IRL title.
#8 Scott Sharp, Delphi Automotive Systems/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (2nd place in IRL Driver Championship Standings / 159 points): "I'm excited for the Delphi team to go back to Dover. We won there last year, and I'm confident we have a great set-up for this year. It's very comforting to know we have had some great speeds there. The Dover 1-mile oval is by far the most demanding track on the IRL schedule both mentally and physically on a driver. The track is so fast. It will be important to stay out of trouble. It's very easy to get caught up in other people's mistakes. The Delphi team needs to have a good race. There are four races to go and obviously accumulating points will be critical. We will need to be survivors at Dover. This so-called "Monster
Mile" is not an easy place to pass opponents. I think this track makes for one of the tightest grids in our history. You really have to concentrate and be focused."
#28 Mark Dismore, MCI WorldCom/Dallara/Oldsmobile/Goodyear (10th place in IRL Driver Championship Standings / 120 points): "I'm looking to have a good race weekend. We were really fast at Dover last year and we qualified third. The track's surface, being much different than the other circuits we run on, makes it hard on the car. There is no room to make a mistake on this track. The high-banked oval makes it difficult to pass people. I feel extremely positive about this MCI WorldCom team. We just need a little lady luck, and I know we can gain in the championship standings."
Tom Kelley, team owner:
"We had a great race at Dover last year. Both cars ran extremely strong. We've just come off a win in Atlanta and I feel the momentum is going our way. I think the key at Dover will be to qualify up-front and to stay out of trouble during the race."
