SCHECKTER TAKES 7TH, CARPENTER 13TH AND FOYT 15TH IN QUALIFYING FOR THE KANSAS LOTTERY INDY 300
KANSAS CITY, Kansas -- Vision Racing driver Tomas Scheckter took seventh in qualifying for the Kansas Lottery Indy 300 and will lead teammates Ed Carpenter and A.J. Foyt IV in tomorrow's race as they will take the green flag from 13th and 15th, respectively.
Scheckter's seventh place start just adds to a long list of good qualifying runs at Kansas Speedway. In five previous starts at Kansas he held the pole in 2002, started from second the next year, and his worst starting position was eighth, just last season. This is Scheckter's third straight top 10 start and best of the 2007 IndyCar Series season.
In fact, Scheckter will be looking to score his fourth consecutive top 10 finish in the No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone this year. His best finish at Kansas is fifth in 2005 and last season at the 1.5-mile oval he finished seventh. Scheckter is currently seventh in the IndyCar driver point championship standings.
Earning his best starting position at Kansas, Carpenter will start from 13th in the No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone tomorrow. He has three previous attempts at Kansas with a best finish of 14th in 2004. He has also been running at the finish in each attempt.
Carpenter is looking for a season-opening repeat performance that saw him start from 14th and finish in sixth at Homestead-Miami Speedway, also on a 1.5-mile oval. That type of performance will allow Carpenter to move up from the 13th spot in the driver championship point standings.
Rounding out the Vision Racing lineup, Foyt took 15th in qualifying today. His previous best start at Kansas is 14th and his best finish is 13th, both in 2004. Foyt is aiming for his third straight running finish this season and an opportunity to move out of 17th in the driver championship point standings. This will be Foyt's fourth start at Kansas and first behind the wheel of the No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
The day's practice sessions proved to be a bright spot for the team as all three drivers made the top 10 in the combined practice results. With Scheckter in eighth, Foyt in ninth and Carpenter in 10th, the trio proved that the team is ready for race action, which is stet to begin tomorrow afternoon, April 29th at 4:30 p.m. Fans can catch all of the action live on ESPN2, IMS Radio Network, XM Satellite Radio channel 145 and on the web at www.IndyCar.com.
Tomas Scheckter -- No. 2 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"We did the best we could. It was a little bit off our quickest, but we put a good car together. Overall it was a good job. It was a good job by everybody on the crew, and I'm happy with that qualifying."
Ed Carpenter -- No. 20 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I would have liked to have been a little bit quicker. We went just a little bit quicker in that last practice. I was hoping to at least match that, but the car is really good. The race car was good today, and we should be moving up towards the front tomorrow."
A.J. Foyt IV -- No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara/Honda/Firestone
"I'm a little disappointed. The car didn't really feel too much different except a little hotter. Going out first probably didn't really help anything, but we will take what we've got and go race."
