KANAAN AND TEAM 7-ELEVEN TAKE NARROW VICTORY AT KANSAS
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 3, 2005) - Team 7-Eleven driver Tony Kanaan edged teammate Dan Wheldon for the victory Sunday at the Indy Racing League IndyCar Series Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway. The defending IndyCar Series champion nipped Wheldon by just 0.0120 of a second in the sixth-closest finish in series history.
Starting from the eighth position, Kanaan quickly moved towards the front of the field, battling with teammates Dario Franchitti and Wheldon as well as Tomas Scheckter and Vitor Meira for virtually the entire 200 laps of the event. Making a final green flag pit stop on lap 192, taking on just enough methanol to make it to the finish, Kanaan rejoined the race in fourth place. As first Meira, then Buddy Rice made their final stops, Kanaan was left to battle Wheldon to the finish. The two raced side-by-side with Kanaan taking the high line, for the final four laps with the Team 7-Eleven driver taking the victory by 36 inches at the line.
Kanaan earned his first victory of the season, followed by Wheldon, Meira in third, Franchitti fourth and Scheckter in fifth place.
Through eight events, Kanaan resides second in the driver point standings with 259 points, 76 shy of Wheldon.
Kanaan and the rest of the IndyCar Series teams will now look towards the Firestone Indy 200 at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday, July 16. The event will be televised live by ESPN, beginning at 7 p.m. (EDT). It can also be heard live by XM Satellite Radio subscribers by tuning into Extreme XM, channel 152.
Tony Kanaan, #11 Team 7-Eleven Dallara/Honda/Firestone:
"This was a wild finish, but I knew that Dan (Wheldon) would be clean with me so we could drive that way. It feels so great to win again; it's been a long time, almost a year. I'm just happy for Team 7-Eleven, happy for Andretti Green Racing and happy for Dan, We're a solid '1-2' in the championship and that's what we need, we need to sweep the championship again this year."
Kim Green, President, Andretti Green Racing:
"We focused very hard on the race this weekend. We were a bit disappointed in our qualifying efforts, but in the end we had great race cars. Tony worked very hard on his high-line during practice. It was a great team effort with great pit stops and great strategy by the engineers. Tony has been knocking on the door all year and I'm very proud that he was able to take the win today."
