Rice Edges Teammate for Kansas Victory
KANSAS CITY, Kan, Sunday, July 4, 2004 -- Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice beat his Rahal Letterman Racing teammate, Vitor Meira, to the finish line by 0.0051 of a second, the second-closest finish in IRL IndyCar® Series history, to win the Argent Mortgage Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway on July 4.
"It's nice to come to your sponsor's-sponsored race and to win," said Rice, who started on the MBNA Pole. "To (do that) here in Kansas City for Argent Mortgage has been awesome. It's a team effort with Pioneer, Honda and Panoz G Force. Without everybody working together, and my teammate Vitor (Meira), this wouldn't have been able to happen. It's great being able to race each other cleanly. That's how it's supposed to happen, so I'm glad I could do it with my teammate. It's fun being able to race like that and being part of a historical moment, especially on the Fourth of July weekend. This is an American series, so it's nice to be able to carry the colors for the U.S. in our home country."
Tony Kanaan, who started on the outside of the front row, finished third. Andretti Green Racing teammates Dario Franchitti and Bryan Herta, the defending race winner, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
It was the second consecutive runner-up finish for Meira, who also finished second at Richmond earlier this season.
"We're the happiest guys because it was one and two for Team Rahal," Meira said. "I wanted the win pretty bad, but not to the point to do anything stupid. The team is there. It is stupid to take both cars out, so I'll take second."
Townsend Bell, who debuted with Panther Racing at Kansas, finished 17th after losing several laps when the on-board fire extinguisher went off in his car. Jeff Simmons finished 19th in his first race with Patrick Racing after an accident with Kosuke Matsuura.
