IRL: Kansas post practice quotes

BUDDY LAZIER (#91 Tae-Bo/Coors Light/Delta Faucet Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "We gained about 1 mph. We are definitely learning things. The track is very fast and very challenging. It's real, real fast but also kind of slippery. We are happy with the way things are going."

FELIPE GIAFFONE (#21 Hollywood G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "It's an awesome track. It's really smooth. It's fast. It's going to be kind of hard to race. We're going to have to really work with the setup. It's a really nice track. Kansas City was never a place for racing. To come up with a place like this is awesome. It's pretty warm. It might affect a little bit. With all the rubber down and all the heat the cars might slide around a little bit. It will be a test for everybody since we've never raced here before."

BUZZ CALKINS (# 12 Bradley Food Marts/Sav-O-Mat Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "We gained a little with the Bradley Food Marts/Sav-O-Mat Dallara, but, unfortunately, so did everyone else. We are going to change the engine and come back at it in the morning."

DONNIE BEECHLER (#11 A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "The car was very good. The times are about the same as this morning's practice. The track has good grip even in the heat."

DIDIER ANDRE (#32 Galles Racing G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "I do like this track. I have not tested here. Today is my first day on the track, and I feel pretty comfortable with the setup. We will just keep working tomorrow to see if we can find more speed."

AL UNSER JR. (#3 Galles Racing Starz SuperPak G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "This is a beautiful racetrack. It is very smooth, and we feel pretty good about our setup so far. We have a good balance, and tomorrow we will just work on trying to get a little more speed out of the car."

ELISEO SALAZAR (#14 Harrah's A.J. Foyt Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "The car is really, really good. We were able to improve it over this morning. I ran by myself all day. We look to be in the front two rows in qualifying."

AIRTON DARE (#88 1-800-BAR-NONE/TeamXtreme G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "The track is very smooth, and it makes it a lot easier to drive on. Right now we are still trying to find

the groove. This time we picked up some more front grip than this morning. The 1-800-BAR NONE car is still really good, really balanced. We just need to find some speed now. The big thing I noticed is, well, I can feel the wind more, and, of course, it is hot. But it's (the wind) not enough to change the balance. Tomorrow we will find more speed for sure."

ROBBIE BUHL (#24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing G Force/Infiniti/Firestone): "It was hot in Richmond. You do get used to it. We need to get used to how it affects the Firestone tires and the car. It is going to be a factor in the race. From the driver standpoint, it's supposed to be hot July 4 in Kansas City. We didn't know it was going to be the hottest weekend so far. The biggest concern is how high the temperature is going to go, and how will it affect our tire management. They (tires) look great." (What notes are you taking?): "I can't tell you. I'm paying attention to the session and what these guys are saying." (About two new tracks in two weeks): "It's fun for us with the league growth and the new markets. It's fun for us to introduce the league to new fans. It is exciting. For the drivers, I like being in the car every weekend. It's not too hard on the drivers. It is great for the league and the fans."

BILLY BOAT (#98 CURB Records Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "It is a good day for the Beck Motorsports team. We feel pretty good, not having tested here to be in the top five. The track here at Kansas is a fantastic facility. It's got a lot of grip. We just continue to try to trim the car out, free the car up to get ready for qualifying. We will come back and work on our race setup, but right now we're pretty happy."

ROBBY McGEHEE (#10 Cahill Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "I feel good, but I can't talk because I have laryngitis. We're just working up our speed and my confidence, although I don't like to admit the latter. It's always like that for drivers the first day they're coming back after a big crash. Physically my leg is fine. I like the track. It's nice. It's a lot like Kentucky and Vegas. It's really nice. I like it a lot."

JERET SCHROEDER (#9 PDM Racing Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "We're slowly plugging away at it. Positionwise, we're not where we want to be, but a couple more tenths will move us up a lot, and we're working hard to make that happen. We're going to do an engine change before qualifying, which should pick us up a little bit. We still have some tricks to pull out with our setup on the car, so we should be doing pretty well by tomorrow."

EDDIE CHEEVER JR. (#51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti Dallara/Infiniti/Firestone): "We haven't run here before, so we had to get as much data as possible. The track is as flat as this table. This is a world-class facility. For the longest of time, we always considered Texas to be our second track to Indy. I think this track is going to give Texas a run for its money." (About number of grooves): "Right now, I think there's a lane and a half. I tried running the highline coming out of (Turn) 2. I don't want to do that again. It's a great track. It's fun to drive on. I went to dinner last night and had people asking me a lot of questions. We're all very happy that you have such a world-class facility." (About competition): "You can bet that everybody will be going for every inch they can. We're going from one of the slowest tracks to one of the fastest tracks in less than eight days. It's pretty interesting."

MARK DISMORE (#28 Delphi Automotive Systems/Bryant Heating & Cooling Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "I love the track. I think it has the capability of running two wide. We're just struggling a little bit." (About practice and qualifying well, but not having the results in the race): "It's extremely frustrating. We're in a situation where we have everything we need to win races, but we're struggling. There are peaks and valleys, and right now we're stuck in a valley." (About adjusting to new tracks on schedule): "When the track is as smooth as this track is, it's pretty easy to adjust to."

BILLY ROE (#81 Zali Racing G Force/Oldsmobile/Firestone): (About being first out): "It was great to be the first one to cross the start-finish line here at Kansas Speedway. I thought it was very smooth. There was a lot of grip for our car. I can't tell if we'll run flat-out, side by side yet. It's a wonderful facility."

SHIGEAKI HATTORI (#55 EPSON Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "I like it (the track). It looks like Kentucky. It's pretty smooth. We tried our race setup this afternoon. I'm happy with the car."

SAM HORNISH JR. (#4 Pennzoil Panther Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "It's a nice, flat track. It's pretty fast, pretty smooth. I think it's going to make for some good racing. We'll have to see what happens when we get all the cars out there on the track at the same time. We're not quite as fast as we would like it to be, but we are going to try some stuff for tomorrow, and hopefully we'll be up there. We'll probably just change the gearing and a couple of other small thing, but that's about it."

GREG RAY (#2 Johns Manville/Menards Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "It's a great facility. We're pretty far off right now. We've got a lot of work to do. We'll have to make a lot of changes. I'll have a lot to talk about with my crew."

JAQUES LAZIER (#99 Sam Schmidt Motorsports Racing Special Dallara/Oldsmobile/Firestone): "Kansas is truly a world-class facility. Given that we are running top speeds at over 215 mph in this heat, is a credit to the track. We ran solid at 211 with a motor that's just about mileaged out. We'll be putting in another (motor) for qualifying tomorrow. Given that we are only in our second race together (owner Sam Schmidt and driver J. Lazier), it's great. It feels like we've been together much longer. The communication is good, and I think we'll be ready for a solid run on Sunday.
