Panther Driver Returns to Favorite Track on a Roll
RICHMOND, Va. (June 30, 2006) -- Nowhere on the IndyCar Series schedule has Panther driver Vitor Meira been closer to victory than Kansas Speedway, which will host this Sunday's race. Meira finished second in 2004 to then-teammate Buddy Rice, trailing the winner by just 0.0051 of a second, and third last year in a three-wide finish that saw Vitor just inches from another win.
Panther has been on a roll of late, entering the weekend in fifth place in the points standings, just 25 points behind last year's champion Dan Wheldon. This is as high as the team has been in the points race at this point in the season since 2002, the last year the team won the league title.
Meira is on a run of six consecutive Top Ten finishes, which includes three Top Fives and runner-up finishes in two of his last three starts. His Top Ten streak is the longest active among IndyCar Series drivers. He finished second last weekend at Richmond International Raceway thanks to a late three-wide pass on Dario Franchitti before a late yellow ended the race under caution.
Last season Panther drivers finished fifth (Tomas Scheckter) and 11th (Tomas Enge) in the race. Scheckter led 63 laps in Panther's No. 4 car last year at Kansas.
Vitor Meira Quote:
"We are happy with the season so far, but the best is yet to come. Kansas Speedway is a track that I like very much and I've been so close here the past two years. Of course I want to win every race, but even when you are second and third in those photo finishes, the fact that you are in the photo means that you had a good race. We discovered some things in the test we had here in Kansas and that is going to help make us stronger this weekend. We've brought one of our best racecars for this weekend, and now the entire team is ready to contend for race wins and a championship"
