Infiniti Tops Speed Charts in Practice at Kansas
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (July 6, 2001) -- Eddie Cheever Jr. and Robbie Buhl placed their Infiniti-powered machines in the top-two fastest spots on the speed charts for the first day of practice for the Ameristar Casino Indy 200 at Kansas Speedway.
Cheever was the fastest of the day with a 216.973 mph lap in the No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti, while Robbie Buhl was close behind in second place with a 216.623 mph lap. The two Infiniti drivers had over a mile-and-a-half advantage over the rest of the field, with the next fastest driver, Mark Dismore, recording a 214.935 mph lap.
Qualifying will be televised on ESPN2 at 6 p.m. (EDT) July 7. The Ameristar Casino Indy 200 will be televised live on ABC at 1 p.m. (EDT) July 8 and "Indy Racing 2Day" will be televised live at 11 a.m. (EDT) on ESPN2.
Eddie Cheever Jr., No. 51 Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti: "I don't mean to sound like an Infiniti advertisement, but I can't say enough about the versatility of this 35A engine. We just came from a very slow track in Richmond where we ran incredibly well, and we're at a fast track here and we're running well again. We have about two miles an hour on the competition. I know that won't hold up tomorrow, but this engine has been very competitive for the last five races, and I'm sure Robbie (Buhl) and I are getting kind of anxious because we haven't won yet."
Robbie Buhl, No. 24 Team Purex Dreyer & Reinbold Racing GForce-Infiniti: "(about driving in the heat) It was hot in Richmond and now it is the hottest weekend of the year so far in Kansas City. From the driver's standpoint it is supposed to be hot in Kansas City, so in that respect we are prepared. It is what it is. The biggest concern is where the track temperature is going to go and how is that going to coincide with our tire management. (about racing in a new market) To be in these new markets and to have such a great response from the fans, and to have them enjoying the races, is exciting for us as drivers. That motivates us during these summer months when we have so many races in a short period of time." <pre> PRACTICE RESULTS
